Burnt house
Where Patrick hanged

A middle-aged carpenter named Patrick Archibong resident in Alesa, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday hanged himself after killing his four children and burning down their apartment.

His wife, a petty trader, was said to have run away after she had a quarrel with the man the night before the tragedy.

Pieces of bread on a disused paint container were seen outside the burnt apartment. The rope with which Patrick allegedly hanged himself in front of the toilet and the plastic chair he allegedly stood on were still there.

The man hailed from Ugep in Cross River State while his wife, a petty trader at the Refinery Junction was Igbo. Neighbours said they came to live at the place with three children and had the last one, the boy, in their one room apartment last year.

No suicide note was found as the entire belongings in the house were completely burnt. But a writing just by the doorpost said, “We are Jehovah Witnesses. Satan, I kill you.”

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident and said investigations were still on. “The motive cannot be established because the accused is not alive. After killing the children, he hanged himself. We have evacuated the five corpses and they are in the mortuary. We are yet to establish contact with his wife,” the PPRO said.
