A political rally held at the SKY POWER ground, along Oba Akinjobi Road, Ikeja, Lagos on Tuesday shortly after noon turned violent as armed thugs stormed the venue. The rally was suppose to be the inauguration of the campaign of the ruling party APC in Lagos, instead pandemonium broke out after several gunshots were fired and several individuals reportedly stabbed during the melie as the hoodlums believed to be members of rival factions of the NATIONAL U ION OF TRANSPORT WORKERS vieing for supremacy.
Among those who we’re reportedly injured during the clash were journalist, as well as a leader of one of the factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo, was also stabbed during the clash. The rally turned riot had several prominent personalities in attendance; from celebrities like the popular fuji musician, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, aka K1 De Ultimate, who was on the stage thrilling the audience when gunshot were fired, to Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who delivered his speech amidst gunshots being fired. During the continuous hail of bullets Abode repeatedly called for unity and support for all dully acknowledged flag bearers of the party during through forth coming elections. At some piont during the fraca amidst the noise being generated by the restive crowd and the trouble-makers, Ambode told the gathering that the police were in control of the situation.
However, things degenerated as the gunshots continued being fired and innocent by-standers attacked, while hoodlums, thugs and criminals took advantage of the atmosphere of confusion to loot, and disposses some individuals of their phones and other valuables. A large number of party faithful were also reported to have trekked to their various homes due to the heavy vehicular traffic caused by the violence.
Eventually, with things getting out of hand, and the law-enforcement officers were unable to restore calmn and order, the governor, his deputy and other VIP’s were escorted out of the venue. Ultimately the APC governorship candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was inable to present his speech as he hurridely gave the closing remarks before being wisked away by his security detail.
The police spokesperson, CSP Chike Oti, confirmed the incident, while claiming, “Two suspects have been arrested.” He also noted that the whole fracas was instigated by a well known trouble maker called ‘Seigo’, who had been declared wanted by the police.
